Every month, millions of households across Pakistan receive an electricity bill packed with numbers, codes and terms that rarely get explained anywhere. This guide breaks down exactly what each part of your bill means, whether it is from LESCO, MEPCO, FESCO, IESCO, GEPCO, PESCO, HESCO, SEPCO, QESCO, TESCO or K-Electric.
The reference number
Printed near the top of every bill, your 14-digit reference number (13-digit account number for K-Electric) identifies your specific connection. It never changes month to month, which is why you can use an old bill — even a photo of one — to check your bill online at any time.
Units consumed (kWh)
This is how much electricity your household or business used during the billing cycle, measured in kilowatt-hours. Your DISCO reads this from your meter (or estimates it, in some cases) and it is the main driver of your bill amount, since Pakistan uses a slab-based tariff — the more units you use, the higher the rate on the additional units.
Payable within due date vs. after due date
Every bill shows two amounts: what you owe if you pay by the due date, and a higher amount that applies afterward because of a late-payment surcharge. Missing the due date does not just cost extra — repeated non-payment can eventually lead to a disconnection notice.
Taxes and surcharges
Depending on your usage slab and whether your CNIC is on the Active Taxpayer List, your bill may include electricity duty, general sales tax (GST), TV licence fee, Neelum-Jhelum surcharge, and income tax withholding. These are set by federal and provincial authorities, not by CitizenPay.pk or your DISCO.
Arrears
If a previous month was left unpaid, that balance carries forward as arrears and is added to your current total. Clearing arrears promptly is the fastest way to avoid a disconnection notice.
💡 Tip: You can check the current amount, due date and status for any DISCO or K-Electric bill for free on CitizenPay.pk’s utility bill checker — no account needed.
